Jersey Fabric FAQs
What is jersey fabric?
Jersey is a soft, stretchy knitted fabric, originally made from wool and now most commonly made from cotton, viscose or polyester blends. It drapes well, feels comfortable against the skin and does not fray like woven fabrics.
Because jersey is knitted rather than woven, it naturally stretches, making it ideal for close-fitting and everyday clothing such as t-shirts, dresses, leggings, loungewear and baby clothes. The fabric takes its name from the island of Jersey, as this history of jersey fabric explains. Our Plain Cotton Jersey is a popular all-rounder in a wide range of colours.

What is the difference between cotton jersey, viscose jersey and ponte roma?
Cotton jersey is breathable and soft, ideal for t-shirts and children’s clothes. Viscose jersey has a fluid drape suited to dresses and tops, while ponte roma is a thicker, more stable double knit that holds its shape for trousers, skirts and fitted dresses.
Choosing the right jersey depends on how you want the finished garment to hang. Printed cotton jerseys such as Baby Elephant are great for babywear, viscose jerseys like Jade Iris make beautiful wrap dresses, and Grey Herringbone Stripe Ponte Roma gives a smart, structured finish. For cosy layers, try Plain Sweatshirt Jersey.

How do I sew jersey fabric?
Sew jersey with a ballpoint or stretch machine needle and a stretch stitch or narrow zigzag, so the seams can stretch with the fabric without the stitches snapping.
Ballpoint needles slip between the knitted loops rather than piercing them, which prevents skipped stitches and small holes. Let the machine feed the fabric without pulling it, as stretching jersey while sewing can cause wavy seams. An overlocker gives a professional finish, but a standard machine works well with the right needle and stitch. A walking foot can also help stop layers shifting.
Pick up stretch and jersey needles, including Schmetz, from our pins and needles range, and matching thread from our threads range at The Cheap Shop.
What is jersey cuffing used for?
Jersey cuffing is a lightly ribbed, tubular stretch fabric used to make the cuffs, waistbands and neckbands of hoodies, sweatshirts, tracksuits and children’s clothing.
The ribbed knit stretches and recovers well, so cuffs and waistbands hold their shape while staying comfortable. Because it comes as a tube, it is quick to cut and attach. Pair Jersey Cuffing with sweatshirt jersey or cotton jersey in a matching or contrasting colour for a neat, shop-bought finish.
