A Little Bit of Everything

Our Other Crafts range is home to the bits and pieces that don’t sit neatly anywhere else, from flower arranging supplies to a paint set for a rainy afternoon and a classic knitting dolly for beginners.

For flower arranging, we stock wet display oasis for fresh flowers and dry display oasis for dried and artificial arrangements, along with floristry sundries for the finishing touches. A pretty ribbon from Ribbons and Trims completes the look.

If you fancy picking up a paintbrush, the Royal and Langnickel 20 Piece Acrylic Paint Set is a great place to begin, and our painting canvas in Calico gives you something to paint on.

Our knitting dolly (French knitting) is a lovely first step into yarn crafts. It turns a single strand of yarn into a cord that’s perfect for bracelets, drawstrings and little decorations, and once you’ve got the hang of it you can move on to Knitting Needles. Pick your yarn from our Yarns range.

Only a small selection of our craft supplies is listed online, so if you can’t see what you need, please get in touch and we are only too happy to help.

Other Craft FAQs

How do I soak wet display oasis?

Cut the oasis to size first, then float it on a bowl of water and let it sink by itself, which typically takes 30 seconds to two minutes. Pushing it under traps air and leaves dry pockets that will not feed your flowers, and soaked foam that dries out cannot be re-wetted, as FloraLife’s soaking guide explains, so only soak what you plan to use. Our Wet Display Oasis is at The Cheap Shop, and ribbon from Ribbons and Trims and our Floristry Sundries finish the arrangement.

What is the difference between wet and dry oasis?

Wet oasis is soaked in water for fresh flowers, while dry oasis is for dried or artificial flowers and must stay dry. Oasis Floral Products’ guide describes its dry foam as designed for permanent botanicals and dried arrangements, advises using soaked foam within one to two weeks, and suggests pushing stems about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4cm) into wet foam to hold them upright. Choose Wet Display Oasis or Dry Display Oasis at The Cheap Shop to match your flowers, and browse Christmas for seasonal decorations to add.

What yarn can I use with a French knitting dolly?

Almost any yarn works, from thick to thin and from cotton to wool or polyester, so leftover scraps are ideal for a first go. Leave a tail of around 10cm (4 inches) hanging through the base, then wind, lift the bottom loop over the top loop and tug the tail every so often, as Gathered’s French knitting guide shows step by step, and Sew Historically’s tutorial confirms that any yarn will do. Pair the Knitting Dolly (French Knitting) with yarn from our Yarns range at The Cheap Shop.

Should a beginner choose acrylic or oil paint?

Acrylic is the easier start, because it is water based, dries quickly and cleans up with water, while oils stay workable much longer but need solvents to clean up. Skizze’s guide explains that acrylic dries in minutes while oil dries slowly and cannot be cleaned from brushes with water alone, and Artful Haven warns that acrylic left on a brush quickly ruins it, so wash brushes straight away. The Royal and Langnickel 20 Piece Acrylic Paint Set at The Cheap Shop is a ready made starter, and our painting canvas in Calico gives you something to paint on.
