Gingham Fabric FAQs
What is gingham fabric?
Gingham is a lightweight plain-woven fabric with an even check pattern, usually in one colour and white. It is traditionally made from cotton or cotton blends and is also known as Vichy check.
Classic gingham is woven from dyed yarns, so the check pattern looks the same on both sides of the fabric. It is thought to have been named after the town of Guingamp in Brittany, and was produced in large quantities in the mills of Manchester from the 18th century, as this history of gingham explains. Our Gingham Cotton is a traditional school check in a range of colours.

What is gingham fabric used for?
Gingham is used for school summer dresses, children’s clothing, shirts, picnic tablecloths, curtains, bunting and craft projects, thanks to its crisp, cheerful look and easy care.
Cotton gingham is breathable and comfortable for summer garments, while polycotton gingham is a practical, budget-friendly choice for school wear and items that need frequent washing. Novelty designs such as Rainbow Gingham Heart Cotton and Rainbow Grid Check Cotton are great for children’s dresses, party decor and play mats.

What is the difference between gingham and seersucker?
Gingham describes a check pattern, while seersucker describes a puckered woven texture. Seersucker is often woven in gingham checks and stripes, giving a textured fabric that sits away from the skin and feels cool to wear.
The crinkled finish of seersucker is created during weaving, so it is permanent and does not need ironing flat. This makes seersucker a popular choice for summer dresses, shirts, shorts and children’s clothing. Our range includes Seersucker Cotton and Poly-cotton Seersucker for an easy-care alternative.

Which gingham is best for school dresses?
Cotton gingham is the traditional choice for school summer dresses, as it is breathable and comfortable in warm weather. Polycotton gingham is more crease resistant and quicker to dry, making it practical for everyday school wear.
Check your school’s uniform guidelines for the required colour and check size before buying. Our Gingham Cotton can be washed at 30 to 40 degrees and hung to dry, while Gingham Polycotton is an easy-care, budget-friendly alternative. We recommend pre-washing before cutting to allow for any shrinkage.
