Lace Fabric FAQs
What is corded lace?
Corded lace is a lace fabric where a fine cord is stitched onto a soft netting base to outline the design, giving the pattern a raised, defined edge and a more luxurious finish than flat lace.
The cord adds texture and structure, which is why corded lace is a popular choice for wedding dress bodices, prom dresses and formal wear. Many corded laces also have a scalloped edge, which can be used as a ready-finished hem or neckline without the need for binding. Our Corded Lace is 100% polyester with a floral design and scalloped edge, and can be machine washed at 30 degrees. For background on the history and different types of lace, see this overview of lace.

What is Raschel lace?
Raschel lace is a machine-made lace produced on a Raschel knitting machine, which creates intricate open patterns quickly and affordably. It is lightweight, soft and widely used for dressmaking and overlays.
Raschel lace is made using warp knitting, a process that produces a stable fabric that resists fraying, making it easier to cut and sew than many traditional laces. Our Simple Floral Lace is a 100% polyester Raschel lace with a flower design, 115cm wide with no stretch, and comes in a wide range of colours.
Raschel lace is a great budget option for trying out lace dressmaking. Order from The Cheap Shop by the half metre or metre, with free UK delivery on orders over £30.
What should I line lace fabric with?
Lace is usually lined or underlaid with a smooth, opaque fabric so the pattern stands out and the garment is not see-through. Lightweight polyester, satin-finish fabrics and tulle are popular choices.
A lining in a matching colour gives a subtle, tonal look, while a contrasting colour makes the lace pattern stand out more boldly. For a floaty, layered effect on skirts and occasion wear, try a tulle or net underlayer, or use a lightweight polyester fabric for a fully opaque lining. Choose a lining with similar care requirements to your lace so the garment can be washed as one piece.
Browse our tulle, net and organza range to find the perfect underlayer, or visit The Cheap Shop in Tiptree, Essex, to match colours in person.
How do I sew lace fabric?
Sew lace with a fine, sharp machine needle, a slightly shorter stitch length and a low iron setting. Placing tissue paper under delicate lace can also help stop it slipping or catching as you sew.
Use fine pins or clips to avoid snagging the netting, and cut pattern pieces in a single layer so you can position motifs where you want them. Where lace has a scalloped edge, lay your pattern pieces so the scallop forms the hem or neckline for a professional finish. Always press lace from the wrong side with a pressing cloth and check the care label first; GINETEX explains the international textile care symbols.
