What is a Liberty Tana Lawn?
Tana Lawn is a 100% cotton lawn fabric that behaves like silk – it is ultra-fine, with a fluid handle and a stunning and intense depth of colour that is truly unmatchable and one of the most defining features of a liberty fabric. Perfect for everyday sewing, these dressmaking materials are soft yet durable, cooling yet warming, and machine washable.
Liberty Tana Lawns are well known across the world due to their distinctive floral patterns and Liberty of London often dive into their archives when designing new collections and bring back classics that have been favourites throughout the decades.
Why is Liberty Tana Lawn fabric so thin?
What allows Tana Lawn fabrics to have such a fine and silky texture is very fine yarns and a very tight weave. This is evident when you run your hands across the cloth and feel the totally unmatched smoothness. This kind of fabric is also sometimes called batiste. Today, most of cotton fabrics are made from short and rather thick fibres, while those from Liberty of London have thin and very long fibres producing a superior quality cloth.
How to sew with Liberty Tana Lawn
We always recommend you pre-wash 100% cotton fabrics before sewing. Natural fibres can shrink a little during thier first wash, though due to the high quality of this fabric the shrinkage will be minimal. You can pre-wash by either soaking in warm water and air-drying, or by simply putting it in the washing machine on a normal 40 degree cycle and air-drying.
For fine fabrics like Cotton Lawn, we would recommend using a thread like Gutermann Sew-All and a fine machine needle such as Schmetz Universal Fine 70/10.
On some of the fabrics on this listing we have shown recommended colour matches in gutermann sew-all thread, any designs that don’t show a matched thread on the pictures will have a white background so can be used with Gutermann col 800 White.Â
