Felt FAQs
What’s the difference between wool felt and polyester felt?
Wool blend felt (1-2mm) is 30% wool and 70% viscose, giving it a soft handle and good shape retention, and it meets the EN71 safety standard for toys. Polyester felt (1.5mm and 3-4mm) is stiffer and holds a crisper edge, making it better suited to structured crafts like appliqué and decorations.
Is craft felt washable?
Wool blend felt can usually be hand washed on a cool, gentle setting, but avoid machine washing as it can shrink or felt further. Polyester felt is more washable and holds its shape better, though spot cleaning is recommended for finished projects with glued or stiffened elements.
What thickness of felt is best for toy making?
1-2mm wool blend felt is the best choice for toy making. It’s soft enough for stuffed toys, conforms well to EN71 safety standards, and is the thickness most toy sewing patterns are designed around.
Can felt be sewn on a machine?
Yes, both wool blend and polyester felt can be machine sewn. Use a universal or ballpoint needle and a straight or zigzag stitch, going slowly on thicker 3-4mm felt to avoid the fabric bunching under the presser foot.
Do you sell felt by the sheet or by the metre?
Felt is available as pre-cut squares and sheets in a range of sizes and colours, as well as in our themed craft felt packs. Check individual product listings for exact dimensions and pack contents.
One flag: the “sold by the sheet or metre” answer is a guess based on the category listing, worth confirming with the actual product data (sizes/packs) before publishing, since getting that factually wrong on an FAQ is worse than not having it.
