Halloween Fabric FAQs
What is the best fabric for Halloween costumes?
Polycotton is one of the best fabrics for Halloween costumes, as it is affordable, easy to sew, crease resistant and comes in lots of fun printed designs. Tulle and felt are also popular for adding volume and costume details.
Printed polycottons such as Witches Halloween Purple and Happy Ghosts are ideal for capes, skirts and simple tunics. Tulle creates witch skirts and tutus, while felt is perfect for bats, hats and masks. Always keep costumes away from naked flames, including candles in pumpkins, and see RoSPA for home safety advice.

How do I make a trick or treat bag?
A simple trick or treat bag can be made from two rectangles of fabric, around 35cm by 40cm each, sewn together on three sides, with a strap or handles added at the top.
Place the two pieces right sides together, stitch around the sides and bottom, then turn the bag right side out. Fold over the top edge and stitch to form a neat hem, then attach handles. For a sturdier bag, add a lining or iron-on interfacing. Hard-wearing Herringbone Cotton Webbing makes strong, comfortable handles.
Try fun prints such as Orange Pumpkins or Spooky Eyeballs, available by the half metre from The Cheap Shop.
How much fabric do I need for Halloween bunting?
One metre of standard width fabric makes roughly 20 double-sided bunting flags, based on triangles around 20cm wide and 25cm long, which is enough for about five metres of bunting.
Alternating the direction of each triangle as you cut helps you fit more flags across the fabric width and reduces waste. Mixing two or three coordinating prints, such as pumpkins, ghosts and witches, gives bunting a fun, varied look. Join the flags along a length of bias binding, leaving small gaps between each one.
Pick up bias binding from our ribbons and trims range, and order your Halloween fabrics together from The Cheap Shop.
When should I order Halloween fabric?
We recommend ordering Halloween fabric by early to mid October, as popular designs can sell out and you’ll want time to finish costumes and decorations before 31 October.
We aim to dispatch orders the same day when placed before 1pm, Monday to Friday, and standard delivery usually takes two to three working days, with an option to upgrade at checkout. Some Halloween prints are only available for a limited time each season, so it’s worth ordering early if you have a particular design in mind.
Delivery is free on UK orders over £30. See our delivery and returns page for full details.
