Christmas Fabric FAQs
What is the best fabric for a Christmas quilt?
100% cotton quilting fabric is the best choice for a Christmas quilt, as it is easy to cut, holds a crisp seam and stays stable when pieced together with other cotton prints.
Quilting cottons have a firm, fine weave that keeps patchwork blocks accurate and washes well year after year. Our Christmas range includes collections such as Nutcracker Christmas by Makower and Traditional Metallic Christmas Quilting Cottons, designed to coordinate across a whole quilt. For techniques, events and advice, The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles is a valuable resource for quilters of every level.

How do I make a fabric advent calendar?
The easiest way to make a fabric advent calendar is with a printed advent panel, which includes the background and numbered pockets ready to cut out and sew in place.
Simply cut out the pockets, hem or bind the edges and stitch them onto the main panel. Adding a layer of lightweight wadding and a coordinating backing fabric gives the calendar body, while a hanging loop or dowel rod finishes it for display. Our Country Christmas Advent Panel and Adorn Advent Panel both have matching fabric ranges for the backing.
A fabric calendar can be refilled every December, making it a lovely alternative to disposable cardboard versions. Read our festive fabrics guide for more tips from The Cheap Shop team.
What is a fat quarter?
A fat quarter is a quarter of a metre of fabric cut as a wide rectangle, roughly 50cm by 56cm, rather than a long, narrow strip across the full width of the bolt.
The squarer shape makes fat quarters more versatile for patchwork, as you can cut larger blocks and shapes from a single piece. They are ideal for trying several coordinating Christmas prints in one project, such as a patchwork table runner, bunting or small quilt, without buying large quantities of each design.
Most of our Christmas quilting cottons are available by the fat quarter, half metre or metre. If you order more than one of the same fabric, The Cheap Shop cuts it as one continuous length from the bolt.
How much fabric do I need for a Christmas stocking?
A standard Christmas stocking typically needs around half a metre of outer fabric, plus the same again for lining if you want a neater, sturdier finish.
The exact amount depends on the size of your stocking pattern and whether you add a contrasting cuff. For a quicker project, a printed stocking panel removes the need for a pattern altogether, as the stocking shape is already printed ready to cut and sew. Our Medium Woodland Christmas Stocking Panel and Large Woodland Christmas Stocking Panel are popular choices.
Finish your stocking with a hanging loop and trim from our ribbons and trims range, or visit The Cheap Shop in Tiptree, Essex, to see our full Christmas collection in person.
When should I order Christmas fabric?
We recommend ordering Christmas fabric from early autumn, as popular festive ranges and panels can sell out well before December and are not always restocked.
Ordering early also leaves plenty of time to finish handmade gifts and decorations. We aim to dispatch orders the same day when placed before 1pm, Monday to Friday, with standard delivery by Royal Mail. Closer to Christmas, check the Royal Mail Christmas last posting dates to make sure your order arrives in time.
Delivery is free on UK orders over £30. See our delivery and returns page for full details, or contact The Cheap Shop if you need help with a time-sensitive order.
